Read a great post by the awesome blogger and author Kristen Lamb, called “Five Warning Signs Your Story Needs Revision”, where she shares what glaring newbie mistakes editors and agents look out for while screening manuscripts.
I especially liked Red Flag #3: Painful and Alien Movement of Body Parts.
“Make sure your character keeps all body parts attached. Her gaze can follow a person and so can her stare, but if her eyes follow…the carpet gets them fuzzy with dust bunnies and then they don’t slide back in her sockets as easily.”
It is a well-known fact that I can’t help but relate absolutely everything to the Buffyverse.

Creepy-ass Body-part-flinging Doctor
I will definitely be scanning my work-in-progress for any of those bad boys. Can’t have any eyeballs flying across the room a la creepy-ass Dr. Ronald Meltzer (of Angel fame).
Sidenote: So…it seems that there is actually a real-life Dr. Ronald Meltzer, a gynecologist in fact, based in Chicago. (Found him on RateMD.com when looking up a picture for this post). For the record, I do not think his body parts break off in order to stalk his female patients. I hope. *Shudder.

She always has great tips! I suspect I do #4, Too Much Physiology. When I’m reading over my draft, I find myself thinking, jeez, one of these heart-pounding days poor Malaya’s gonna have a heart attack! (Malaya’s my MC).
